Happy Spring! ChatGPT was the buzzword of April, so we’ve got news on how AI is already being included in coding bootcamp curriculums. This April, we saw a tech training provider close an $8M funding round, and there was more good news about state- and federally-funded training that is removing barriers to technical careers. 2U brought a lawsuit against the Department of Education, and movement on Pell grants for short-term programs (like coding bootcamps) remains stalled. Plus, we’ll let you know about the 7 new coding bootcamps that we added to the Course Report directory in April.

$8M IN BOOTCAMP FUNDRAISES

THE LATEST ON PELL GRANTS + OPMs

  • Higher Ed Dive reports that the OPM, 2U filed a lawsuit against the Department of Education this month, alleging the department radically redefines the definition of what it means to be a third-party servicer. 
  • The Department of Ed responded with a blog post that promised to revise the guidelines. Phil on Ed Tech expands on the back-and-forth about this new redefinition of “third party servicer.”  
  • Higher Ed Dive reports that Pell grants for short term programs continues to be stuck in its quagmire because lawmakers are unsure whether short-term Pell grants should cover for-profit programs.

LOWERING THE BARRIERS TO TECH CAREERS

  • New Jersey joined many other U.S. states in loosening its degree requirements for state jobs in favor of a skills-based hiring approach. 
  • West Virginia’s Generation WV program will now include a needs-based living stipend.
  • Lighthouse Labs has partnered with Saskatchewan Polytechnic to offer free technical training in web development and data science. 
  • CIO Economic Times reported on the state of Argentina’s tech training initiatives, such as the federal program, Argentina Programma 4.0 and smaller programs like Puerta 18. 
  • KTLA interviewed Christina Wu, a classically trained musician who made a career change into tech through the Niantic-sponsored cohort at Tech Elevator
  • Tech Elevator is celebrating a major milestone this month of 3,000 students placed in jobs nationwide! 

WHAT’S NEXT IN TECH IN 2023: AI + MIAMI

  • Josh Bersin wrote after attending the ASU/GSV conference that edtech is crazy for AI right now.
  • CNBC interviewed venture capitalist Jim Breyer who pointed out that AI may have the biggest effect on the medical and medtech field. 
  • The Washington Post tracked how many Bay Area tech companies have been making their exodus to Miami.

  • Sync NI interviewed women in the UK who made career changes through the free, online program, Code First Girls. 
  • According to AZ Family, a new program called Persevere is a one-year technology training boot camp now offered to those incarcerated in the state!

  • Upright Education announced a partnership with Monroe County Community College this month.
