Happy New Year! Here at Course Report, we kicked off 2023 with the release of our Best Coding Bootcamps list and announced our most recent Alumni Review Sweepstakes winner. In bootcamp news, layoffs at tech giants like Google and Amazon receive a lot of media attention, but journalists uncovered the industries that are actually adding tech jobs right now. We saw skills-based hiring prioritized by private and public sectors, and some interesting fundraises and acquisitions within the coding bootcamp world. Plus, 3 full-tuition scholarships you can apply for this month!

$55M IN FUNDRAISES + 1 ACQUISITION

• Eleven Fifty Academy was acquired by Indiana Wesleyan University.
• ThriveDX, which partners with universities on cybersecurity bootcamps, has named Tim Roemer the President and General Manager of the Public Sector. 
• TechCrunch reports that cybersecurity training platform, Hack the Box, raised $55M and plans to expand its business. 

3 FULL-TUITION SCHOLARSHIPS

• BrainStation Miami announced its new scholarship program, Impact Miami, which is part of Tech Equity Miami and focused on removing barriers into tech for underrepresented groups.
• The Edie Windsor Coding Scholarship will be awarded to seven App Academy students. Applications will be accepted through February 15, 2023.
• Perficient will be expanding their Bright Paths program in partnership with Hackbright Academy to a national scale. 

TECH HIRING AMIDST LAYOFFS

• CNBC reports that while big tech employers like Amazon, Google, Meta, and Microsoft are announcing layoffs, the broader economy added technology jobs at a rate that offset those losses.
• The New York Times reinforced that the majority of tech jobs today are at companies outside the tech sector in industries like banking, retail, health care and manufacturing whose operations are increasingly becoming digital. These companies are also found in growing tech markets and not large, tech cities. 
• Data from a recent U.S. News & World report ranked Software Developer as the “best job in America.”
• J.J. McCorvey wrote an article for NBC News about how the newest tech hires moved into tech during the “Great Resignation” and finding that their new skill sets continue to pay off even as the hot job market cools. NBC News hired the successful new tech careers of a Codeup grad and a University of California-Irvine UX/UI Boot Camp grad.
• CNET published a reminder that the U.S. government continues to need tech talent.
• CIO Dive wrote about a new report by Cengage Group which confirmed that workers who switched jobs during the Great Resignation gravitated to tech. 

THE NEED FOR SKILLS-BASED HIRING

• The World Economic Forum has issued a new Global Skills Taxonomy to create a unified skills language for skills-based hiring.
• Utah’s Gov. Spencer Cox announced they eliminated bachelor’s degree requirements from its state government positions. 
• Pennsylvania's Gov. Josh Shapiro announced the state had removed its 4-year degree requirement from 92% of its state government roles. 
• Mayor Eric Adams unveiled a new push to place 30,000 New Yorkers into apprenticeship programs by 2030 in a significant expansion.
• On the Course Report blog, we spoke with reps from Kroger and FAST Enterprises (two hiring partners of Tech Elevator) about the skills they’re looking for from their bootcamp hires.

THE CYBERSECURITY JOB OUTLOOK IN 2023

• HR Dive took a look at what’s continuing to contribute to the cyber talent gap.
• Fortune also chimed in about cybersecurity hiring trends in 2023, which included high cybersecurity job demand, hiring more women for cyber roles, and upskilling current employees.
• The New Stack jumped in on how to hire for the projected 3.4 million cybersecurity talent gap with diversity initiatives in mind.

PROJECTED GROWTH OF OPMs + FOR CREDIT BOOTCAMPS

• EdSurge shared their predictions on what they expect to see in edtech in 2023, which included the continued growth of workforce management companies like Guild and Multiverse. 
• Stephanie Hall wrote a critique of the financial arrangements of OPMs and universities for The Century Foundation’s blog. 
• Through a new partnership between Code Fellows and Northeastern University, students and alumni who finish a Code Fellows program can transfer up to 24 credits towards the completion of a Bachelor in Science in Information Technology at Northeastern.  

NEW SCHOOLS

• Springboard announced a new partnership with Gonzaga University.
• Fullstack Academy announced a partnership with Nexus at Michigan Engineering.
• ThriveDX has partnered with State College of Florida to open its SCF Coding Academy.
• Nonprofit coding bootcamp, Operation Spark, announced it is expanding its program to Atlanta.
