I came to Coding Dojo trying to redefine myself, and it helped me do just that. I had a bit of experience programming before, but nothing formal, and most done on my own.   It's not easy. If you don't have the dedication to...

Thank you for in-depth and detailed review, feedback like this truly helps us improve. In 2013 you attended one of our first cohorts, since then we’ve taken major steps towards refining our program and making it into what it is today, which is a much different picture than our original program. But talk is cheap, so here are a few specific changes we’ve made that address the problems you highlighted:

    1. Instructor Experience: Coding Dojo lead instructors across all locations are experienced developers. Unlike many bootcamps that hire part-time instructors, our instructors are full-time hires coming from the likes of Microsoft and NASA. Several have well over a decade of programming and industry experience that they bring to the table. We have established an exceptionally rigid hiring process for our instructors to ensure we are truly getting the best out there.
    2. Focus on JavaScript: As you noted, when you were in the program JavaScript/MEAN was just becoming the “next big thing.” We realized that, which is why it’s now a foundational component of our 14-week program, with 4 weeks spent on the material. Due to our success in this area, we have created a corporate training program where (typically large companies) send their employees to us to improve their chops.
    3. Job/Career Support: In early 2015 we rolled out a comprehensive Career Services program supporting current students and alumni including one-on-one mentorship, career workshops and forums with industry leaders. Since then we have developed important partnerships at all of our locations and it’s proving to be very successful, for example a recent graduate received offers at both Google AND Apple at the same time.
    4. Learning Experience: You’re absolutely correct in that we don’t hand hold students and that it’s not for everyone. You need to be self-motivated, be okay putting in long hours and that you get what you put into the program. That being said, our students are typically physically in class with teachers, TA’s, and mentors and peers for 8-10 hours every day. We now provide a higher level of support than any of our competitors, however it is very important for the success of our students that they learn to be self-motivated and confident enough to solve problems on their own so that they land higher level, higher paying jobs.

We regret that you didn’t have the experience you expected. However we are thrilled to see that, despite your experience, you still landed a job as a Front-End developer! Thank you again for sharing your feedback, and please know that we’ve recognized many of those concerns ourselves, and have taken steps to address each and every one of them in the past 2 years. If further assistance from our career services team would be of value to you, please reach out to us and we will make ourselves available at no charge.
