This August, saw over $175M in fundraises in the coding bootcamp space! Republicans in the US shared what they would like to see in an expanded Pell Grant program, and an OPM giant, 2U, had some growing pains as it shifts to focusing on edX. Skills-based hiring continues to be top of mind for employers, so we’re shining light on the coding bootcamps that are working hard to eliminate gatekeeping for tech skills training and tech jobs. Plus, we added 16 new bootcamps to the Course Report school listings this August!

OVER $175M IN BOOTCAMP FUNDRAISES 

• Degreed announced its $153 million Series D round, which brings Degreed’s total fundraise to $360.2 million.
• Security Week reports that Cybrary raised $25M in venture capital. 
• According to TechCrunch, Web3 bootcamp, ChainShot has been acquired by the crypto developer platform Alchemy.
• Education Technology reports that Northcoders secured a £4m government contract to continue supporting its efforts of helping Brits make career changes. 
• Sifted reports that Microverse has doubled its valuation through a $4M extension of its $12.5 Series A round. 

THE LATEST ON PELL GRANT & ISAs FOR BOOTCAMPS

• Republicans from the Education & Labor Committee of the US House of Representatives announced a proposal to expand eligibility for Pell grants. There are some interesting guidelines in this proposal!
• Inside Higher Ed reported on a new bipartisan ISA bill with several consumer protections.
• Inside Higher Ed reported on 2U’s layoffs and announced that the company is restructuring to focus on edX.
• EdSurge highlighted 2U’s new strategy and how it may affect OPMs.
• Zovio, which now owns Fullstack Academy, announced that they have sold the OPM segment of their business to the University of Arizona Global Campus.
• WSB-TV covered a new lawsuit with more than a dozen plaintiffs against online coding bootcamp, Clever Programmer. 

REMOVING GATEKEEPING FROM TECH OPPORTUNITIES

• USAToday notes that 18% of companies are prioritizing bootcamp training certifications instead of excluding candidates without degrees.
• Year Up announced they are partnering with OpenClassrooms, an US-DOL registered apprenticeship, to create a new apprenticeship program called Earn More, Learn More.
• Code Fellows has partnered with the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services in order to offer free tech training to anyone who is also qualified to receive federal Basic Food assistance. (Learn more about this program in our Alumni Spotlight with Code Fellows grad Bill.)
• According to Refresh Miami, 4Geeks Academy partnered with United Way to expand access to coding bootcamps to underrepresented Miamians.

BRIDGING THE TECH GAP

• Prism compared the tales of two BIPOC bootcamp students who attended Ada Developers Academy and Rutgers University Coding Bootcamp (powered by 2U/Trilogy).  
• Forbes pointed out how the rising cost of cybersecurity bootcamps alongside inflation is making it hard for people, especially minorities, to enroll.
• Spectrum News reported that We Can Code IT’s goal is to have 70% of their bootcamp graduates to be from underrepresented groups in tech by 2030.
• Devmountain and Hackbright Academy were endorsed as OneTen Talent Developers. They also announced a partnership with tech company, ACL Digital, in order to sponsor Gender Diversity in Tech scholarships. 
• WLOX reported that 10 coders graduated from the non-profit organization, Mississippi Coding Academy.
• 2U announced a partnership with the city of Tulsa to offer tech training to underserved populations in the city.

5 NEW BOOTCAMP PROGRAMS 

• Springboard announced a partnership with National University in San Diego to offer online tech bootcamps.
• In Australia, ServiceNow launched a free coding bootcamp as part of their initiative to train 1,000 Australians in digital skills by the end of 2022.
• QuickStart has partnered with California State University - Chico to offer online bootcamps in cybersecurity, cloud engineering, and data science. 
• Fullstack Academy has partnered with Louisiana State University with the initiative of training people to fill over 10,000 product management jobs in south Louisiana.
• Western Kentucky University has partnered with Promineo Tech to offer online digital skills bootcamps. 
• GeekWire reports that Galvanize has closed their physical campus in Seattle.

OUR FAVORITE PIECES ON THE BLOG

Jess was inspired by the career change of General Assembly grad Mell. Mell pivoted from an in-person banking role in Atlanta to a remote software engineering role at Vanguard. He made this career change in his mid-30s, and has lots of great tips for anyone who’s thinking of making a career change later in their careers!

Liz kicked off our new blog series, Ask a Career Coach, by speaking with Marlene Tang, Alumni Director & Career Coach at Coding Temple, about what graduates should aim for in their second job after bootcamp. Marlene answered this beautifully, whether that means going after a promotion at your current company that you love or moving onto a new company. She even covers the salary raise that you can expect from a promotion or a new job or just doing nothing!
