Accessible, challenging, inspiring!
I was initially intimidated to undertake this course because of my lack of experience in this immediate field of design. I was relieved upon arriving to find a real mix of people with a range of experience, so I didn't feel so out of place.
We...I was initially intimidated to undertake this course because of my lack of experience in this immediate field of design. I was relieved upon arriving to find a real mix of people with a range of experience, so I didn't feel so out of place.
We started with an overview of design thinking, gaining an understanding of the key principles underpinning UX design, as well as a bit of the history of how it has developed, and closely related fields and roles such as UI, product design etc.
My favourite thing about the course was the tutor's continuous encouragement of the class to offer opinions and ideas to engage with the content. I think this is really important when using a 'crash course' format. They created a relaxed atmosphere, and I think we were lucky to have 2 such experienced tutors whose experience we could draw on.
Absorbing all of the content was a big challenge, and I would advise anyone doing the course to make sure you have a bit of time booked in near the end to complete the presentation assignment.
In the final class, I really enjoyed hearing everyone's project concepts, and all though it was slightly nerve-wracking, I think that presenting our work gave us the best experience of the authentic job of a UX designer. The skills and knowledge needed for me to become a UX designer (such as user research, and information architecture) also taught industry-standard tools and software such as Figma to wireframing, prototyping, and user testing.
I was pleased to attend the program's curriculum which allowed me to apply their newly acquired skills to real-world projects.
Additionally, the instructors were experienced professionals and knowledgeable about the industry and provided valuable insights into the field. It was a great place to create networking opportunities and connect with other professionals in the field.
The program was intense and demanding as it was reaching the Final project deadline, requiring a significant time commitment, time, and a lot of effort.
Cost-wise, the program was totally worth it, overall, the Brainstation UX Design Bootcamp was a valuable investment in my career.

To further expand on my experience, there were several things that I particularly enjoyed, as well as a few opportunities for improvement:
Positives:
- Instructors: The instructors were experts in their field, and I particularly appreciated Kelly's no-nonsense approach and helpfulness.
- Community: The community was a highlight of the program, and meeting so many interesting people was worth the investment and choosing the in-person option.
- Demo Day: This was a fantastic opportunity to develop presentation skills and expand my network.
Areas for improvement:
- Submission expectations: It would be helpful to receive clearer guidance on the format of submissions, as it often felt like instructors were on different pages. Providing extra guidance on presentation deck formats, as well as real-world presentation deck formats, from the beginning would be appreciated.
- Design systems / Figma skills: While the program covered a lot of ground, I feel that more time could be dedicated to creating components, variations, and auto layouts. As far as I understand so far, these are essential skills for junior designers to have a solid grasp of.
- Employment rates: The program claimed a 90% employment rate, but this seems to be outdated and simply not true. While it is possible to find a position, it takes time, and company claims of high employment rates should be taken with a grain of salt.
Suggestions for future students:
- TAKE A FIGMA COURSE PRIOR TO BOOTCAMP. I saw many students struggling to get a grasp of Figma for many weeks.
- Prepare to put in work. Like, real work. Will get your money's worth.
- If you are an introvert / get anxious about big crowds and being around many folks every single day - maybe consider online or, even better, get comfortable with being uncomfortable and practice being around people.
- Get familiar with the design process prior to taking the boot camp.
- Start thinking about the topic/problem space for your capstone in advance. You will be given a week to come up with a problem space which is very little. Bonus point if you choose an area you are passionate about and would potentially want to work in a similar field.
Overall, I would recommend the full-time program for individuals without many life commitments who can commit 10+ hours a day to the program. This is the best way to get the most out of the experience.Overall5.0Curriculum5.0Job support5.0Instructors5.0 -
