    Web Development

Having gone through the course, I wanted to leave a review for CareerFoundry, because it really helped me in the beginning reading about other people's experiences.

For me, I was looking for a career change and just general direction in life when I first started looking into web development programs. For me, there were 3 important criteria that needed to addressed:

    - flexibility

    - cost

    - support/job assistance

The biggest factor for me was ...

    Worst.tutor.ever

If you are looking for guided mentoring, this is not the course for you. Most of the time you're totally in your own and you're lucky if the tutor even looks at your code. I was sold on this mentor/tutor thing as somehow receiving extra care and help, but the reality is that you get more out of udemy and other free resources. In at least one instance, I ended up using the resources of another bootcamp to make sense of their materials. They portray this as a 15 hour/week program, but I fou...

    Dear Anonymous,

We are building a community of dedicated, passionate and supportive tutors and mentors, so it is deeply alarming to us to hear you have experienced something that does not adhere to these values.

We are very eager to resolve this and any other issues that might be affecting your course progress and experience. Please contact us directly so that we can act on your feedback and find you the best tutor ever.

To address your concerns about the time commitments, with a 6-month course, we recommend about 15-20 hours of course-work per week. This is an average estimation and as such can vary from student to student, as well as due to the individual weekly task load.

We would love the opportunity to make things right and help you successfully finish the course. We hope to hear back from you soon!

    Best,
    Martin

    Waste of time and money

tl;dr: spend 3 months teaching yourself with free quality materials, then spend money on a far better course

This course is an absolute waste of time and even more so, money.

Basically what you get here is a poorly written Bootstrap tutorial, which can be learned in about 3 or 4 hours for free.

Next, the Javascript portion of the course is essentially how to copy & paste a Google Map api and some jQuery plugins into your Bootstrap site.

    Next, the...

    Dear Anonymous,

We’re very sorry you haven’t informed us directly about your bad experiences while studying our course. We always welcome feedback to improve our students’ experience along the way - particularly regarding a negative mentor experience. If we are made aware that you are having difficulties in any area, we can act quickly to resolve the situation.

Please keep in mind that most of our users are complete beginners. In the web development field, a lot of your early work will be far from perfect and that is completely OK. We’re here with you to help you get through all your problems and things that are hard to grasp at first. But again, if you are concerned about the quality of your work, we encourage you to either speak to your mentor, or come to us, so that we can do something about it.

Furthermore, we have had over a hundred students become Jr. Web Developers after completing the course. 9 of them got a job through our placement team in the past 3 months. It is our course content and the practical skills learned throughout that prepares them for their first job in web development.

It’s a shame you decided to pay for the course, complete it and not report on all the faults you  encountered along the way. We feel confident that your experience could have been completely different had we been able to solve these issues for you.

While we can’t go back and change things, we would love to discuss compensation for your experience. Our students are our top priority and we want to make it up to you. Please get in touch so that we can find a solution together.

    Many thanks,
    Martin

Mentors make or break this course, and if you get a good one, it's worth the money. Some students have had to switch mentors because feedback was very poor, or they weren't timely and involved in the student's progress. CF should restrict the number of students per mentor, so mentors are able to give adequate and timely feedback for each student and not feel overwhelmed by having too many students to deal with along with their day jobs.

    Dear Anonymous

Many thanks for taking the time to write such a thorough and detailed review of your experience with CareerFoundry. Suffice to say, we are very sorry you did not feel you got the experience you deserved and we would like to do everything in our power to fully understand what happened.

You wrote in your review: “Mentors make or break this course, and if you get a good one, it's worth the money.”

We agree, our mentors really are the backbone of everything we do here! Would you mind telling us which course you took with CareerFoundry and who your mentor was? We truly appreciate all feedback we receive on our mentors.

It is particularly beneficial to both parties if a student is able to provide feedback whilst still studying with us. We then act quickly to remedy any situation whereby you are not getting the care or tuition you need. For any student who is unhappy with their mentor’s performance, we are always happy to pair them with a different mentor as quickly as possible.

You wrote in your review: “CF should restrict the number of students per mentor, so mentors are able to give adequate and timely feedback for each student and not feel overwhelmed by having too many students to deal with along with their day jobs.”

Our mentors here at CareerFoundry choose the number of students they themselves feel able to take on. Some of them have day jobs, others mentor full time. None of our mentors are pressured into taking more students than they have the time to instruct, support, review and guide fully. If any of our students alert us to a mentor they are unhappy with then we act immediately to find out what the problem is and solve it ASAP. We are extremely proud of our mentor community: a community of world class experts in their fields. However mistakes do happen, and when they do we do everything in our power to put things right again.

Your wrote in your review: “The course content could be much better, and sometimes there are spelling or grammar mistakes. Some lessons are not very clear or well written, and some are. CF needs to review the course material regularly and make sure it is the best it can be. More visuals, and maybe video incorporated into lessons would make it much more engaging than just written text with links to other articles on the web.”

It’s really great that you took the time to give rigorous feedback on our course materials - thank you for that. We are constantly reviewing, updating and improving upon our expert-written content, we even have a team dedicated to just this job!

Regarding video content, we encourage all of our students (and non-students too!) to attend the many free webinars we run alongside the course which contain instructional as well as inspirational content. We also use numerous graphics, images and diagrams within the course materials to aid each student’s learning. However your feedback that you would ideally work with more visual materials has been passed on to our Curriculum Team who will take your suggestion on when reviewing our course content for the future.

You wrote in your review: “They seem to be growing and adding more staff, which is good for students and having dedicated career support is beneficial seeing as they now have a get a job guarantee.”

Yes! CareerFoundry has in fact more than tripled in size since the beginning of the year. One very important aspect of this growth has been our Job Placement Team. This team is dedicated to placing our graduates into jobs they love in technology. If a graduate isn’t placed in a job they love within six months of graduating with us, they get all of their course tuition fees back. That’s how confident we are not just in the work of our Placement Team and our extensive network in the technology industry, but also in our extremely hardworking and talented students.

You wrote in your review: “Aside from the mentor there aren't many personal touch points. You get automated emails from the 'career success team' but they lack a personal touch and feel too robotic.”

We were extremely sorry to read that you felt like we lacked ‘a personal touch’! If there’s one thing we are passionate about it’s always being there for our students when they need us. We have a whole team of dedicated student advisors who work tirelessly answering student questions, as well as onboarding, guiding and supporting them in all of the administrative and personal aspects of studying a new course. We absolutely LOVE hearing from our students, and encourage all new students to get in touch with us upon enrollment. Could you perhaps provide us with some more details of your experience? Did you speak to anybody in our team?

You wrote in your review: “The only way to network with other students and share tips and resources as well as get help is the CF Slack channel. CF should really pay to upgrade the account so there isn't a cap on number of messages available. Older messages aren't shown because CF has a free account.”

Our Slack Community is a fabulous example of how engaged and active our students are. Yes, they help each other, they chat, some of them meet up in their own towns and cities and work together on projects, or have hackathons of their own. This community is something we are extremely proud of and many of our students have spoken of how this online community has kept them motivated and focused when they have otherwise felt isolated in their studies (a common problem with online learning).

However, our Slack Community is not the only way our students get help. We have student advisors who help students with every aspect of the course; from overcoming technical issues, to helping a programmer find a coding partner. We obviously have expert mentors who teach the students and guide them through their course materials, meeting them regularly via Skype and reviewing their course submissions. We also have an entire Placement Team to get our graduates into their first jobs in the industry.

Again we are deeply sorry you were not satisfied with your CF experience. We would love to talk to you in more depth about exactly what happened and see what we can do now to ensure you leave us with a wholly positive experience of us and what we do.

Please do reach out if you can: my email is rosie@careerfoundry.com.

    Best wishes,

    Somewhat satisfied

    Hi,

I have really loved the material in this course. The materials and information were clear, concise, and easy to understand. Even the links to outside resources were super helpful. I read all of them even though that material was optional.

But I am VERY disappointed with the course description. It stated the student would only need to spend 15 hours a week for 6 months to finish on time. I actually ended up spending more like 8 HOURS A DAY, 7 DAYS A WEEK, and I still...

I did a lot of research before choosing Career Foundry.  I also took the free portion of a few other online bootcamps, to get a feel for what I liked and which I would choose.  In the end, I went the less expensive route and honestly feel like I wasted my money.  The tutor/mentor system is a joke.  I got more of a response from the guys at The Firehose Project (another bootcamp) when I did their free 2 week starter course, than I did in 4 month at CF.  When you are completing a structured ...

    Dear Anonymous

Many thanks for writing such an in depth review of your experience studying web development with us. We can’t overstate how valuable this kind of feedback is for us to continue to grow and learn both as a team and a company.

We were saddened to read that you were disappointed with your CareerFoundry experience. It would be very helpful for us to understand exactly what happened so we can prevent this from happening again, and leave you with a more positive experience of CareerFoundry.

You wrote in your review: “The tutor/mentor system is a joke.  I got more of a response from the guys at The Firehose Project (another bootcamp) when I did their free 2 week starter course, than I did in 4 month [sic] at CF…. When finally got around to checking my work, he passed things that created huge issues down the line and never should have been allowed.  The few times I got him in chat to ask a question, he seemed to be clueless.”

As you have chosen to remain anonymous in your review, perhaps you could reach out to us privately and tell us who your web development tutor was? (I have included my personal email address at the end of this response, so you do not have to reply publicly if you do not want to.)

However, without more details we are unable to speak to your tutor directly about their conduct. Please do get in touch so we can act on your feedback.

It goes without saying that we are extremely sorry you felt let down by the response time and knowledge-level of your tutor. All of our tutors are hired based on their experience in the field, their professionalism and their desire to further the knowledge of others.

Regarding the frequency of communication between yourself and your tutor, all of our tutors are required to answer students with 24 hours on Slack, and within 48 hours on the platform (with some exceptions for weekends and national holidays).

When students alert us to delays in response times from their tutors (or mentors) - as occasionally happens - we contact the tutor immediately to find out what the hold up is, and either assign the student a new tutor or resolve the issue the current tutor is having so that all parties are communicating with ease again. This quick reaction ensures that the student can get back to learning with as little disruption as possible.

You wrote in your review: “When you are completing a structured program and you run into things you dont [sic] understand, you need answers right away in order to continue with a full understanding.”

We couldn’t agree more! Which is why we have created a system whereby our students not only have immediate feedback from an on-hand tutor via Slack and the platform, but also the opportunity to discuss issues more deeply with a mentor in a Skype call. We also have student advisors who can jump in and help if there are any issues a student is having that are unrelated to the course materials which might be holding up their learning.

You wrote in your review: “My mentor (checks final projects and gives career advice in 4 spread out video calls), on the other hand, was awesome.”

We are extremely pleased you had such rewarding interactions with your mentor. We think our mentors are awesome too! Again, if you’d like to get in touch and provide us with the name of your mentor we would happily pass on your feedback.

You wrote in your review: “The course work leaves much to be desired.  The front end course is written very well.  The back end relies on blazing through very technical situations w/o much explanataion [sic].”

We are obviously distressed to hear that you found the part of the Web Development Course which covers back end programming more difficult to understand, or that it required further explanation. Programming is no piece of cake, as I’m sure you know. If we were able to get more detailed feedback from you on exactly which exercises you struggled with, I would love to pass this information on to our Curriculum Team who are working every single day to improve our offering.

We work on our course materials not just with technical experts, but also with in-house curriculum and educational specialists who spend a great deal of their time working on making the course material and exercises digestible and relevant to each of our students. We also offer students the opportunity to give feedback on the course materials after every single lesson so that we can continue to learn and improve on what we can offer.

Obviously all students have unique ways of learning, not to mention different speeds with which they can absorb sometimes very difficult concepts. That’s when the tutor steps in to provide on-hand support and answer any questions the student has to get them over the ‘hump’ of the difficult exercise and onto the next lesson.

You wrote in your review: “The front end course is very good.  The chat rooms, while sparsley [sic] populated, are a big help. They offer a money back gaurantee [sic] if you dont [sic] find work in six months, which is awesome.”

We are very proud of our Web Development Course and are pleased to hear that part of it exceeded your expectations. Our Slack community (‘chat rooms’) is a fantastic example of how engaged and active the more than 1000 students and alumni are. They help each other with both technical and practical problems, they share tips and tricks and some of them even meet up in their own towns and cities to work on projects. Many of our students have spoken of how the on-going support of this community has kept them on-track and motivated.

The success of our Job You Love Guarantee (‘money back guarantee if you don’t find work in six months’) has really opened our eyes to what our students can achieve with the right guidance and support. Our Placement Team is dedicated to placing our graduates into jobs they love in technology within six months of graduating with us. If this doesn’t happen, the graduate gets all of their tuition fees back. That’s how confident we are not just in the work of our Placement Team and our extensive network in the technology industry, but also in our extremely hardworking, dedicated and talented students.

Thanks so much again for taking the time to review us and I hope my response has in some way helped. Again, we’d love to hear more details of your experience, especially regarding your tutor, so please do drop me an email at rosie@careerfoundry.com.

    Best,

Pass on this one, I wish I did.

This school was such a waste of time.

I feel so stupid for doing so much research beforehand. I thought I picked a really good school, but this place is awful. I am a current student in the Web Developer Course, and everyday I wish I would have picked a different school.

The way these lessons are scripted is very awkward to read and hard to understand. I have spent more time trying to understand what they are trying to say, rather than doing the lessons themselves. <...

    Dear Anonymous

Thank you for taking the time to write a review of your experience on our Web Development Course. We really value this feedback as it helps us grow and learn as both a company and a team.

You wrote in your review: “The way these lessons are scripted is very awkward to read and hard to understand.”

We were obviously extremely sorry to read of your disappointment in the course materials, and concerned that you found them hard to understand.

Web development is no piece of cake, as I’m sure you know, which is why our Web Development Course is written entirely with beginners in mind. Our in-house curriculum experts are working every single day to ensure that all of our courses are not only the very best out there, but that they are also as accessible to beginners as conceivably possible.

Our Curriculum Team do not work alone: they collaborate daily with world class web developers, developers who have worked for companies such as Google and Amazon. These experts write and review our course content so that by the end of their course, a student who was a complete beginner has created a portfolio that is ready to show potential employers. In fact, we’re so confident in what our students learn with us that if they haven’t landed a job they love within six months of graduating we offer them their money back, no questions asked.

We would really value the chance to hear more specific feedback about what you found hard to understand so we can evaluate our exercises and course content with that feedback in mind.

You wrote in your review: “If you ask your tutor for help, good luck. They won't get back to you for weeks, and then when they do, they seem more confused than you are.”

We were both surprised and shocked to read of your bad experience with your tutor. All of our tutors are hired based on their knowledge in the field, their enthusiasm for web development and their passion for sharing their knowledge with others. Not only that but each tutor is required to answer the questions of their students within 24 hours on Slack (excluding some bank holidays and weekends) - have you spoken to one of our Student Advisors about the problems you’ve been having?

Our Student Advisors are on-hand to answer any questions, complaints or queries you have about your course, including any difficulties with your mentor or tutor. If any of our students alert us to a problem with either their tutor or their mentor we always work to find a solution, and when necessary assign them a new one immediately.

I have included my email address at the end of this response. We would very much appreciate it if you could let us know who your tutor is so that we can rectify the situation as soon as possible, and speak to you about how we can make your experience with CareerFoundry a positive one.

The mentor makes or breaks this course. Mine was not great (not responsive, and offered little good/constructive feedback) so I felt like I was all on my own. I was about 6 weeks late finishing the course and when I did- nothing. No certificate or badge or anything. It is quite intensive but much easier at first (so do lots of assignments in the beginning as you will need more time at the end). Does it teach you UX? Yes. Is it worth the price? Probably. Dear Anonymous

Thank you so much for leaving a review of your time studying UX design with us. This kind of feedback is so important because it gives you the opportunity to let us know in detail about your experience with CareerFoundry and we can continue to improve, learn and grow both as a company and a team. It also helps us clarify what could have been done differently, and if there’s anything we can do now so that you take away a more positive image of us and what we do.

You wrote in your review: “The mentor makes or breaks this course.”

We’re extremely proud of our mentors and the work they do - they are indeed the backbone of CareerFoundry and everything we stand for. We pick our mentors based on their industry expertise, their passion for what they do and their desire to share that knowledge with beginners. Our mentors work not just to impart knowledge, but to guide our students as they navigate changing careers.

You wrote in your review: “Mine was not great (not responsive, and offered little good/constructive feedback) so I felt like I was all on my own.”

We’re very sorry that you felt unsupported by your mentor while studying. Did you report the problems you had to our Student Advisors? Our Student Advisors work tirelessly to ensure that each and every one of our students is getting the guidance and help they need from their mentor as and when they need it. When they are alerted to a problem they work quickly to resolve it, and, where necessary they are happy to assign the student to a new mentor.

As you have chosen to remain anonymous I can’t write specifically about your mentor, however I have included my email at the end of this response, so perhaps you could let me know via email. Without knowing your specific case, I can only say that if we were alerted to the problem we would have done everything within our power to find a solution to the problem.

You wrote in your review: “I was about 6 weeks late finishing the course and when I did- nothing. No certificate or badge or anything.”

Each of our students receives a certificate and a congratulatory email upon completion of their course with us. As you mentioned, you were six weeks over your course period with us, which means your mentor was no longer reviewing your exercises. This means that although you may have completed your work, your mentor had not approved it, so you had not officially “finished”. If you had alerted us to the fact that you were running out of time, or even if you had alerted us after you had run out of time, we could have arranged an extension of your mentored course time so that your mentor could have marked your work. Once that had been done (and assuming all the work was correct and up to standard) you would have also received a certificate and congratulatory email from us.

You wrote in your review: “Especially with the $ back guarantee if you don't find a course.”

We’re glad you brought this up! You’re right, if a graduate of ours does not find a job they love within 6 months of finishing their course we refund all of their course fees, no questions asked. This guarantee reflects not only our confidence in what our students learn and the mentors who teach them, but also the deep need for tech talent in numerous industries right now, and our fantastic Placement Team who work directly with our graduates to help them all find jobs they really love.

You wrote in your review: “But there are many pitfalls: poorly designed course structure, assignments that don't parallel the lectures, etc.”

We were sorry to read you that you were disappointed with the course materials. We work on our course materials not just with technical experts, but also with in-house curriculum and educational specialists who spend a great deal of their time working on making both the copy and exercises digestible and relevant to each of our students. We also offer students the opportunity to give feedback on the course materials after every single lesson so that we can continue to learn and improve on what we can offer.

Obviously all students have unique ways of learning, not to mention different speeds with which they can absorb sometimes very difficult concepts. That’s when the mentor steps in to provide on-hand support and answer any questions their student has to get them over the ‘hump’ of the difficult exercise and onto the next lesson. If a student is having difficulties with their mentor, as you mention you did in your review, we always seek to find a solution as soon as possible, so the student can continue studying with all the support they need.

You wrote in your review: “I highly recommend abandoning their sample project of designing a project management app and find your own project that is meaningful, that you will enjoy working on, and that you can use after the course is over.”

Our students are not only welcome but encouraged to choose their own project to work on if they already have an idea in mind. We just ask that they get it approved by their mentor, but this is very rarely a problem. Did you speak to your mentor about working on your own idea?

Thanks so much again for taking the time to review us and I hope my response has helped to clear up a few things. Again, we’d love to hear more details of your experience, especially regarding your mentor and your views on the course materials, so please do drop me an email at rosie@careerfoundry.com.
