Nology

The 12 week web development course with _nology was the start of such a journey for me. Having followed a career in West End Musical Theatre, I was starting the course with absolutely no experience in coding. The combination of really getting stuck in and having the most amazing coaches for support meant I learnt so much in such a short space of time. Starting to code in May and then graduating in August led me onto my first job in tech in September. A crazy but fantastic journey and one that I'm still on - the learning never stops. The most productive and life changing way I could have spent a spring/summer lockdown!

I attended the 14-week Deutsche Bank ‘tech accelerator programme’ run by nology, and I thoroughly enjoyed my time during the course. 

The curriculum included everything you need to become a full stack developer, including HTML, CSS, JS, Angular and Java. The course was very fast paced but there was plently of time to consolidate your knowledge and push yourself further once you understood, to give yourself more of a challenge. I loved the format of having taught content from the trainers in the morning, and then being able to do challenges in pairs or work on personal projects for some of the afternoon sessions. 

Nology really makes sure to use the ‘best practices’ of software engineering from the very beginning, which i think makes this course so valuable. This includes things like pair-programming, working in a test-driven development fomat and even working in Agile sprints.

Overall, I highly reccomend the nology course to anyone looking to really dive into learning software development. If you have the motivation and drive to work hard, nology will give you all the tools you need to succeed.

I had a wonderful 12 weeks at Nology, and left the course with an incredible job ready to go. The more employers have exposure to the past and present students, the more interest they seem to be showing. So it is a fantastic way to not only learn how to code in JavaScrippt but to also learn about workplace best practies and then move into an exciting career with loads of potential. The trainers will push you to get the most out of the course, but they are fantastic and really supportive! I highly recommend the course to give yourself a running start in a growing industry and fantastic job. 

I have completed the 12-week Nology bootcamp and had an absolute blast learning to be a developer.

The course is intense, and you will be pushed hard throughout, however the extremely experienced trainers and the close-knit group of students working together through the course really do help make great graduates at the end.

The course provides not only excellent coding skills but something I have found to be amazingly beneficial when interviewing for roles is the experience gained around how you will work as a developer. The Agile way of working is pushed as well as the soft skills needed to help you progress throughout your career.

I would highly recommend this course for anyone wanting to break into development who have the drive to be great at what they do!

The course is an immersive experience into the world of tech and programming, with the real difference here being a focus on employability at the same time. I saw myself and other students advance in terms of our technical skill, and finish the 12 week boot-camp feeling ready to enter the industry as a junior developer.

At times the course is challenging, of course that is what you want. There is a huge network of mentoring both before, during and after the course and that is what really sets it apart. The course makes students aware of events occuring in the region it operates in, allowing students to explore and create a network and gain advice from others working in the industry. 

I was impressed by the range of students taking the course too. The ages spanned from 19 to 38. people were looking for carrer changes, had marketing backgrounds, had done philosophy degrees, worked in finance and so on. That allayed my preconceptions about working in tech. There was a huge teamwork elemnent to the course, and working on real life projects really made us feel like we were in a realistic working situation.

I can't recommend the course enough, it's given me and the other students technical skill, programming and industry knowledge, plus a confidence to go out there into the real world and take it on!

My 12 weeks at _nology were incredibly enjoyable, and I have come out of it with so many more skills than when I began. The course is structured really well, and the engaging methods of training are super effective at getting the best out of every single person on the course.

The overall working atmosphere was a massive positive. Everybody is happy to help everybody else, and there is a real emphasis on making everybody the best developer that they can become in the 12 weeks. Collaborating as a group is much more enjoyable than everybody keeping themselves to themselves. The course is hard work, but the team environment makes it much less stressful (as do the regular social events!).

The coding ability that everyone possesed by the end of the course was amazing, especially given that no prior experience is required. The 12 weeks begins with covering the fundamentals and the basics of programming through lots of small, fun coding challenges. By the time the more complex stuff comes up, everyone has been given a real confidence boost by the trainers. Working on genuine client projects towards the middle and end of the course gives valuable experience. Throughout the entire 12 weeks, the trainers were always willing to put in the extra hours to help with any coding issues that anybody had.

Soft skills are also vastly improved. One of my personal favourite activities across the whole course was delivering a TED-style talk to a small group. Soft skills are super important in any industry, not just tech, and _nology certainly filled me with much more confidence when it comes to soft skills.

Overall, you will leave _nology feeling like a well-rounded and confident developer, armed with plenty of valuable skills to start a career in tech. It is not an opportunity to be missed!

 

 

While my experience with the course, coaches and cohort was generally positive I found that the curriculum didn't realistically reflect what coding languages and experience would be needed in the workforce. For example, a few months following my 'graduation' from this course, they went back on their word and essentially said the language we prepared you most in is now completely irrelevant and want you to focus on xyz (of which we had really only had 1 day of training on, bearing in mind that the day of training is reduced to half day in the later half of the training course)

A large component of what makes this course attractive is the job readiness and the employment contract which lets you experience 18 months at a partner organisation picking up real world skills. While i understand the current job economy is on the low, Nology continues to recruit new students/employees while knowing they are not capable of delivering what they promise - in some cases where i assume students leave voluntarily and are forced to pay the exit fee upwards of $10,000. 

I attended Nology London campus (January - April 2020). Entry criteria was super lenient. During the assessment day, you build a small game and coach would asses your problem solving approach. Pre-course was based on some videos on Youtube. I did not receive any feedback for pre-course technical tasks.. Though, before joining the course I were told to have a  mentor. 

In my cohort, we  only learned Javascript  and React. whereas, the course outlines I received, included  REDEX and Angular too. Maybe it is a marketing tool to advertise  more tech tools and later teach less.  Later on when I raised this point;  nology management came with a reason that they keep on changing the course content as per industry requirement. In that case, you only email course content that will be covered on campus Teaching less tools mean you should make a refund to trainees. 

About teaching quality, I liked Matt and Shea teaching style. I found them very flexible and patient with trainees. You can ask hundreds of questions to Matt, his approach will always be with a smile. The best thing, I noticed about Shea. He pays equal attention to all the trainees. However, the lead coach teaching style was bit disappointing. He is an excellent developer but not a good coach. He has a tendency to give an impression if you are a  least and most favourite trainee, that is the worst thing you want to face in an intense bootcamp. He was reported to HR for his unfair treatment to a trainee. Nology HR is quite professional. They took the matter so seriously and investigated the matter. As a result, the coach had to apologise to trainee. The reason to write this here is, in case if he does it to any trainee in future. Nology should provide him some soft skills training.

My Cohort was so lucky. We had two trainees , Andy and Dhiren. They joined the course with excellent understanding of JS, React, Python. Both of them were super helpful. I would like to say, a big thanks to them.

The job support was extremely disappointing. At the end of the course, we were allocated  Opus recruiters and funny part is, non of the recruiter contacted me. There was supposed to be a recruitment day at the end of the course. Unfortunately, no employers committed their presence and it was canceled. There were 15 trainees in my cohort. Nology found jobs for 3 trainees. In later months, two trainees found a job on their own. To my knowledge, presently 9 of us are still looking for a job. The course was job guaranteed. Only one trainee received a refund. I must add, poor hiring partner network. 

It took me months to decide if I should write this  review or not. As i wanted to forget about nology and taking as a life learned lesson but  unconsciously, I  was blaming myself as a selfish person. Today, I got the courage to speak about it. I joined nology by reading some outstanding graduates reviews.  Later on I found, some of them they work for Nology. 

A small tip to join any bootcamp, is to contact their graduates on linkedin and know their opinion about a bootcamp. It is only my opinion about Nology. Please you do your own research before joining the bootcamp.
